Welcome to the Art Department
March 7th, 2012 by kdachtler
This has been another exciting year for the art department. We have been exploring various cultures, artists, art movements, our environment, and significant events. While exploring these topics, the students have experimented with different mediums such as clay, plaster, duct tape, computer generated art, paint, pencil, and mixed media,etc..
To enrich the students’ educational experience, we have greatly benefited by utilizing outside resources provided by the Museum of Nebraska Art and the Joslyn Art Museum. We have continued with the distance learning program we developed with the Museum of Nebraska Art for secondary level students. The director of education shared thought provoking lessons such as ‘what is art?’. She also provided lessons which correlated with each new topic. The high school students also took a field trip to the MONA to personally view the artwork they had been learning about through the distance learning program. All the students had the opportunity to learn from educational trunks provided by the Joslyn Art Museum; these trunks were filled with information and artifacts about, different cultures, nature, and art.
To start the year off, the elementary students learned about different types of animals through the use of an educational trunk. They saw how animals are incorporated into art and they increased their knowledge of animals. Throughout the year, they also did a lesson about Nebraska history, and they learned about different cultures and art such as Asian, Native American, Greek and Roman cultures.
The junior high students participated in lessons that focused on the elements and principles of design as well as learning about different artists and cultures. They have experimented with wire, clay, paint, and pencil, etc.. They have really enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the interactive distance learning program with the MONA as well.
The high school students have created relevant art such as a duct tape mural of Nebraska and human form sculptures which reflected their interests and causes they believed in. They also learned to sketch on location, improve their drawing and painting skills, and experiment with computer-generated art etc.. In addition, they have increased their awareness of different art movements, history, and artists thanks to the Museum of Nebraska Art.
The secondary level students are currently preparing for the upcoming art show in Mullen NE. They will be competing against other schools in the district in various art mediums. It is a great opportunity for the students who attend to see what other students are doing and to inspire them for future projects.
We are quickly approaching the end of the 2011-2012 school year. For the remainder of the year, the students will continue to create projects that reflect their ideas and broaden their awareness of art in our society and in other cultures.
